A decorated Marine veteran attacked a North Carolina waterfront bar with a short-barrel AR, killing three people and injuring five in what police called a premeditated attack. The person charged with the crime, who had served in Iraq, had a history of mental health issues and violent behavior. It isn't clear how he obtained his weapon. As discussed in American Gun: The True Story of the AR-15, any veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan went into combat with short-barreled versions of Eugene Stoner's AR. You can see a map of major shootings involving AR-style guns here.
