Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, a Democrat, has signed one of the strictest gun laws in the nation. Beginning in 2026, the state will ban the sale of firearms with detachable magazines, a feature on AR-15 rifles and many other modern firearms. Coloradans could only purchase such guns if they apply for a special license and get safety training. As described in American Gun: The True Story of the AR-15, Colorado has been the site of several mass shootings involving AR-15s, including the 2012 Aurora movie theater shooting. The lead sponsor of the bill, state Sen. Tom Sullivan, lost his son Alex in the attack.
