Ukraine is replacing its old, Soviet-designed Kalashnikov rifles with a new, domestically-produced version of an AR-15, called the UAR-15. The gun, which is lighter and more accurate than the older AKs, also uses NATO-approved ammunition. Today, most of the gun's parts are made in Ukraine, and all parts are expected to be produced in the country by next year. As described in detail in American Gun: The True Story of the AR-15, Stoner designed his rifle to be lighter, easier to use, and simpler to maintain for military forces. He wanted the rifle to be used by the U.S. military and its allies.
